This has already been happening in the latest releases of Firefox and Safari. Both of which have been focusing a lot on performance along with everything else. I'm certainly curious to see where Google will match up, but the other browser companies have certainly been concerned with performance.

I've always held this tenet that UI responsiveness affects how the user feels about a given application the most out of any other factor. And most UI speed problems can be tied to performance. If Google can deliver the
performance gains they're talking about, the Web could evolve into a
platform for first class applications.

Even if Google doesn't, I'd expect you'll see other browser companies continue to focus on performance as well.
