Speaking from the other side of the table - a visual designer for business software/applications - I typically do better work when I'm more integrated with the entire development process rather than being brought in at the end to polish the interface. Rich alludes to the importance of this in his response: rather than throwing design over the wall, there's more collaboration throughout the entire process. This adds a lot of value to the relationship and thus, creates a better end product.
