Great article. I read it then quickly passed it on to the many people I know
who have asked me what I do for a living but still don't quite understand.I
especially like the "not just about usability" as I'm a strong believer in
compelling and fun to use interfaces as well. I wouldn't consider my ipod touch
the easiest to use but I definitely enjoy interacting with it. On the other
hand, if it was too difficult to use, then i wouldn't use it. It's really about
finding that "sweet spot" as well (like you mentioned about finding the sweet
spot between business goals, user's goals, and brand). As for the "user
experience designers are liaisons, not subject matter experts," I understand
what you were getting at, but would argue that we are "user experience experts"
-- and that is our subject -- not the software or the door knob or the device.
Our expertise comes from our knowledge of which tools to use and when to use
them, as well as our design knowledge based on past experiences
and general heuristics. Thanks again for a great article that summarizes the
current state of the field.Sally
