I would argue that there is a difference between a designer who is also a trained musician (creating software for themselves to make music with) from a designer who isn't a trained musician trying to sit in their user's shoes for a while.

The first is more Self Design (as I described here: http://is.gd/gLAQ) versus conducting more encompassing user research. Self design has its place, but it shouldn't be confused with research.
