Look into the google short code (466453). Its a free service that uses
the Google search engine for weather, movie times, addresses, etc. It
offers a simple error text when no results could be found and
reiterates the provided search criteria. 

There is also 1800-555-8355, tellme, a voice directed service that
provides audio information and a free411 number, i cant remember the
number that has the option to send a text with address or phone
number to a location after navigating a voice activated search. 

Those are just a few resources off the top of my head. I dont know of
any official best practices regarding SMS in particular.
