Having worked with open source tools as a developer and with developers for five years now, I think the cultural obstacles mentioned in the Paula Bach article above (which is an excellent piece, thanks for the link!) are very real. I think it would be useful to seriously consider strategies for overcoming and/or resolving these obstacles before approaching specific projects. Obviously, there will be some project communities that would love IxD contributions. However, I just want to emphasize that some project communities may offer resistance (or just ambivalence) and that thinking through how to overcome those reactions would make successful collaborations more possible.
