I think it's shocking in an interesting way when someone does open up
on FB - just as it would if they did so in a group setting. In some
ways it makes revelations easier, because you don't have to see
anyone's face, even though it's not anonymous.

What sites like FB do really well, though, is encourage the small
congratulations/condolences that would otherwise get left behind. If
someone posts an award or a death in the family, they tend to get a
lot of small notices from even distant friends that they wouldn't
get without FB. It also creates a notification system so you don't
seem like you're bragging or fishing for sympathy.
