Just recently suffered through a test of a site that does this.

All the participants who clicked it thought that they were going to get the
.pdf by doing so.

(i.e. the actual .pdf, not the Acrobat plug-in).

Then it got horrible.

So what to do? I have to admit that it wasn't a well-designed site or a
well-designed link, so your mileage may vary. I pretty much hated it by the
end of the tests and longed to eliminate it.

Best,
Caroline Jarrett
