Both Flickr and Facebook include the message in the body of the email in addition to the site's inbox. I for one rarely do anything more than note the message in my email and hit "delete".
A secure site like a bank or PayPal has a very different flow as the user is REQUIRED to click a link and login to the site to see the message. Often this leads to questions such as: 1) Does the subject of the message get included in the email? 2) Do you track responses and re-send email notifications for unread messages? 3) Are messages on-site deleted or archived? 4) What happens if someone replies to the notification message? 5) Should the on-site message inbox look like an email inbox? ....Dan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
