I'd like recommend a book I just finished: "Observing the User Experience," by Mike Kuniavsky. He works at Adaptive Path.
The book is a beginner > intermediate primer on conducing focus groups, usability testing and research. It's quite insightful, and makes most work seem obvious. I learned something new every chapter.
