I HIGHLY suggest that anyone who knows Shaun ask him to open up his purchase model to make available a 30-day trial. If like he says this is like a software model and not a service model (wow! that is so 2001) then I suggest he map against the most common practices.
All the best UI in the world is meaningless if you never really get a chance to look at it. $30 is steep for an unproven product category like this one. As a note, if this was $5-$10 to start up and then $2 for the iPhone app then I'd probably jump w/o a trial.
