It didn't seem like the author was making much of a point other than to say that people have different attitudes and viewing patterns toward the search engines. This was more of an exploratory study used to inform future research areas than anything else.
I replicated the bing.com search for "digital camera" and found my eyes getting stuck on the sponsored ads directly above the organic results, which is probably due to the perfect horizontal alignment of that all and a lack of visual division (other than the slight yellow box).
