Department Description

The Business Intelligence Usability and User Interface Design team drives the 
user centered design process for Oracle Business Intelligence, the industry's 
most comprehensive offering designed to address the entire spectrum of 
analytical activities including query, reporting, analysis, data integration 
and management, desktop integration, and business intelligence (BI) application 
development. We are a diverse team of user experience professionals skilled in 
all aspects of user centered design including user research, usability 
evaluations, interaction design and prototyping.

A senior usability engineer conducts usability evaluations, focus groups, 
customer research, competitive analysis, and survey research for applications 
products.  They articulate a usability plan for one or more application product 
domains.
Specific job responsibilities include: developing test plans and materials, 
administering usability evaluations or needs gathering methods; performing data 
analysis and interpretation; running video equipment and data logging systems; 
planning and conducting contextual research with other team members; reporting 
and presenting to product teams. This person also mentors junior staff members 
in usability evaluations and customer research, interfaces with lab 
administrative staff to run and maintain Usability Labs, and helps maintain 
department web sites.  As a member of the User Experience team, you will 
develop and apply software design/usability processes in the investigation of 
technical problems. May develop user profiles, with emphasis on human error 
control, display issues, visual interaction, physical manipulation and task and 
objective analyses. Provide product usability, evaluation and support to 
product development teams, including the analysis and investigation of 
applications/systems including tactile methods, visual graphics, web, 
multimedia, voice response and conversational user interaction. May assist in 
developing design concept and implementation, providing input on user design 
considerations. May produce specifications describing user needs and internal 
structures for product in development.  Work is non-routine and very complex, 
involving the application of advanced technical/business skills in area of 
specialization. Leading contributor individually and as a team member, 
providing direction and mentoring to others. BS or MS degree or equivalent 
experience relevant to functional area. Typically seven years of software 
engineering or related experience needed. 
Preferred Skills
Masters or Ph.D. in industrial engineering, computer science, or psychology 
with specialization in human computer interaction, survey research, statistical 
methods and experimental design
2 years of Human Factors job experience in an industrial setting in the areas 
of gathering user needs, scenario development, conducting usability 
evaluations, and questionnaire/survey design 
Strong communication and interpersonal skills honed through years of working in 
multidisciplinary, collaborative teams 
Experience applying customer centered design methods to product development
Domain knowledge of business intelligence, data warehousing, query and analysis 
or reporting a plus.
