On a personal note, I love these menus. You have the potential to get a great index of a site or an "area" of the site, capitalizing on the scanning we do nowadays, without taking up an entire page for navigation.
I have run into the same question on category indexes/introductions and the relation of labels and containers within a hierarchy. I agree that a 'breadcrumb' should include those labels since they should include things that were used in the mind of the user to get to where they are now.
