I've had fantastic success with highly detailed design and
interaction specs for 26 years. Across an incredibly wide range of
products, devices, platforms, and systems.

The specs I'm familiar with have spanned a wide range of fidelity,
from ongoing iterative and minimal specs co-evolved with coding to
high-fidelity detailed specs documenting every last detail and
resource which were then handed off to development teams and built to
exact spec. Successfully.

There are no hard and fast rights or wrongs in this field. I would
discount strident opinions disparaging the use of design specs.
