I think, on a professional level, that LOPSA should just sit on the sidelines and watch. Actively participating in a highly divided public debate is usually a good way to get X% of the population to regard you unfavorably. You _hope_ that Y% will regard you more favorably, in order to compensate, but in this particular case, I'm unsure we have anything to gain. Even within LOPSA, taking this position might cause ripples. For example, (playing devil's advocate here) a counter-argument could be made under the ethics clause: "I will do my best to make decisions consistent with the safety, privacy, and well-being of my community and the public, and to disclose promptly factors that might pose unexamined risks or dangers.
