Charles touches on a good point.

There are really two levels at which this question is asked: personal
introductions and professional introductions.

With personal introductions, the person asking isn't asking for your
benefit. They are only asking so they know what "box" to put you in.
The aren't asking to give you an opportunity to validate your
importance to an organization or to society. Chances are that
"Computer stuff", and <painstakingly_detailed_description/> are both
going to get you lumped into the same box.

With professional introductions, the person is probably still not
asking for your benefit...but they are giving you an opportunity to
validate your importance to an organization or to society or whatever.
They are looking for an answer to this internal question: "What
value or potential value is this person to me/my organization/my
client(s)".

Perhaps there _is_ a third level, as well: When we introduce our
selves, in which we have need to clearly define our role, our
expertise, our qualifications...such as just before delivering a
presentation at a conference, or to management, etc.
