I have two rules with regards to certs: Don't bother with low-level certs and
multiple-choice based tests aren't worth much unless they are relatively
high-level. So skip the common low-level multiple choice certs (MCSE, A+, etc.)
and aim higher.

The RedHat RHCE (hands on practical test) is the only cert so far that I have
felt worth going for. It can't tell you any details about the test or testing
procedures or the RedHat Brute Squad will come after me. But you can get
details here:

http://www.redhat.com/training/certifications/rhce/

But be aware that it is still primarily a money maker for RedHat and it isn't
cheap. I skipped the classes and just took the test (after 17 years of using
Linux one can often do that) and there were a few things that were explained in
the class which preceded the test that I would have liked to have known (such
as the actual start time of the exam!).

I'm thinking of going for some security certs like CISSP, CISA, ISA, CEH etc.
next. On one hand they are multiple-choice (except for, CEH, I believe), on the
other hand they seem to be in-demand higher level skills.
