I like this idea. Perhaps a (PDF|e-book) copy of an agreed upon sysadmin-related title such as "Essential System Administration" or "The Practice of System and Network Administration". I remember being able to select booklets with my SAGE membership; some of those booklets were great to get started on a given subject. Does LOPSA have any plans to develop similar content? > ... > > The reason I'm pushing for a membership drive sort of thing here (even > if we don't label it as such) is that increasing our rosters allows us > to get bigger partnerships/sponsorships and in turn recruit even more > members. At the beginning of this month's Crabby Admins meeting, Tom Limoncelli mentioned that one of the most important functions of the upcoming PICC conference is to develop and promote the sysadmin community. I agree with that wholeheartedly and honestly, that's the biggest reason I joined in the first place: to get to know others in my profession to learn from and teach. Let's build our community with new/renewed memberships. We should promote the local chapter and local mentors to prime the pump. Here's how it'd work: 1. When members register, automatically cross-reference their location (if provided) with local chapter data. Automatically email the member with information on the ${closest chapter}'s meeting details, schedule and chapter contacts. Sure, many new members may already have this, but it helps to reinforce the sense of community and it's great customer service. 2. Similar to #1, determine if there are any local mentors available and automatically email their contact information to the new member ("Hey, if you've got a tricky project and you're interested in mentorship..."). Email the local mentors the new member's contact information as well ("Hey, fresh meat!"). Sure, there's a match-making protocol for that program, but perhaps greasing the tracks is a good thing here. To me, that adds tons of value to the membership. Even more than the potential for free schwag.
