I've had this in my bookmarks for a week now, and kept the tab open for a few months I think, on the notion of "this looks really good". It's a "collaborative editor" and can export the usual formats. http://substance.io/ And they claim it's GPLed so you could well run it inhouse. Personally I use confluence and almost no "documents" anymore, but that's easy to say with a $10 license and just one user.
