Hello Everybody!

This Linux Administrator is without a cause. Currently
struggling to find opportunities. I get the
feeling that this time of year is significantly slower than
others for hiring. The number of System Administrator postings
online are very few in number!

Hi Ash. I'm catching up on mail but decided to chime in.

My question to you all is; do you know anyone (maybe
you) looking for a proficient and experienced Linux System
Administrator? I am located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada but
telecommute would be a great alternative.

Wow that surprises me. I lived in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for nearly 8 years and I have to say jobs were always plentiful.

I put lists of a few job sites here:

What out of the box avenues have you taken in the past while
sitting in my situation? I'm almost to the point of spamming a
lot of companies with a heart felt email explaining my
        abilities.

Network, network network (I mean the human kind). I was a regular at GTALUG (http://www.gtalug.org). There are a lot of tech groups in TO. As well as networking, attending these groups is fun and you learn interesting stuff.

Recent immigrants to Canada face an additional challenge. Not sure if this applies to you in any way but I'll post it regardless as someone here may find it useful.

As I found out when I migrated to Canada, getting that first job is the hardest. Canadian employers often like to see 'Canadian experience' even when (IMHO) it doesn't matter - administering a Linux system is pretty much the same no matter what country you, or it are located in. I had heard about the Canadian experience problem before arriving but only half believed it. It was certainly true when I arrived in 2003 and probably still is. Landing that first job in .ca is the hardest. Once I had landed a short contract role (for which I took a significant pay cut) the problem went away and the second (higher paying) job was easy to get. The rest is history.

Good luck with the search.

Cheers,

Rob
