I'd second the recommendation for PFSense. We've been using it to drive authentication and routing for 3 wireless networks here at work (Captive portal with Vouchers, Captive Portal with RADIUS, and WPA2-Enterprise backed by Active Directory).

It's very solid and featureful. It runs great in VSphere with the VMWare support package installed.

Hmmm, interesting....guess I need to look harder....

I have thought on occasion of finding something to try running
pfSense....though I'm looking for gigabit <$200.

I'm currently in a rush to migrate services DNS/NTP/Radius/DHCP/etc from
a pair of boxes running Ubuntu that EOLs now.....to a pair of Shuttle
XS36Vs running FreeBSD....

When I had upgraded 8.04LTS to 10.04LTS it destroyed one of the servers.
(an upgrade bug that was apparently fixed a couple weeks after I got
bit) Plus it also downgraded them into 'desktops', because they're only
32-bit machines. So, at first I was delaying upgrading to 12.04LTS as
long as possible...when I decided that I would go FreeBSD instead.
Finally decided that I should get cracking around March 27th.

And, now one of the old boxes has been locking up a lot lately....

So, I had wondered if I could build something similar as a router...
though had only found one possibility with 2 - Gb NICs.... it didn't
have serial though,

    Close to that budget:

    1. Router with pfSense ($225):

    2. Cisco SMB WAP321 ($190 + PoE Injector ~$60):
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833150173

I've been really happy with both pieces. For the WAP321, I've
deployed them in pretty simple situations, but it can do multiple
    SSIDs, etc.

Combined with the pfSense (or even simpler: m0n0wall) router, you
can easily setup a captive portal if that's your cup of tea.

        Hi,

A local coworking company that I work from needs to buy a new
wireless router. I was wondering if you guys/gals had any
recommendations. Budget is <= $400 and the router would ideally
have the ability to have multiple accounts with various levels
        of access.

        Any suggestions?

        Thanks!
