You've hit the nail on the head here. I feel like we're selecting for people
who are great at interviewing, which doesn't map very well to "does this person
actually do good work?"
At a previous job, we wound up setting up virtual environments for them to
solve problems in. While this was great and exposed a number of weaknesses in
otherwise promising candidates, a number of interviewees wound up actively
disliking this.
