Here is a good example of how information like this can be abused.

Vollman has an article in Harpers — behind a paywall, unfortunately — about how his review of his FBI file revealed that he was a suspect both in the Unabomber investigation and later in the anthrax-letter investigation, both for mightily thin reasons.....
If you look at the sort of information that this file contained, and how he was detained at the border, and considered a suspect in many different crimes, and then think about what is being gathered about everyone that could be used to harass them in similar ways, it should help settle the "what do I have to hide" question.
