Where I work, salary is a challenge as well....I started here at 40% cut from
what I was making before....I'm still way down.... since salaries have been a
hot topic on campus lately....there had been a report putting our median
salaries are 77% the median of our peer institutions.

Or that we're on this campaign to be in the top 50 public research universities
to 2025, and that our median is below the bottom of the top 50....

If only we could get a job posting to explain all the perks, though it was
really hard finding information on stuff.... But, I had trouble finding things
out on my own browsing our website. I did find things like 22 days of vacation
per year, no preexisting conditions clause in health insurance (though I didn't
let my coverage lapse while waiting to get coverage here...but heard of people
during the employee orientation doing that.) Of course, such things won't
apply soon. The mandatory retirement plan that takes 5.5% of your gross, and
matches it with 8.5% of your gross.... Plus two voluntary plans allowing up to
15k/yr each (probably more now....)

Or that its not we can ... but we're expected to take at least one training and
attend one conference each year. Found out in my first performance review that
I should get dinged for not having taken any training or gone to a conference
in the past year...but they would wave it because I had started mid-year. The
following year, I did a week of training in St. Louis and went to my first LISA
in Dallas.

The year after that it was a week in Ft. Lauderdale and my second LISA in San
Diego. The following year, I got a week of training in Kansas City before such
things came to a halt. Where talk of furloughs or layoffs started floating
around.

Though the decline in continuing education support for us, could also be that
we used to be the vice provost we were under handled ITS and continuing
education. Where at an IT retreat, she said she expected us to be able to
leave our jobs better than when we were hired. The following year, she was
forced to retire and they split continuing education away from ITS (where
eventually we went to having a CIO.)

It was also during the week I was in Kansas City, that an EF4 tornado hopped
across campus....

There's only been one state funded raise in the 7+ years that I've been
here.... 2%.... there were one or two unfunded 1% raises...which nobody got.
Though in recent years we've gotten mid-year tuition funded raises. We're
about to enter a 3 year plan to make a start on the salary issue...where the
Chair of our board of regents has commented that year 3 is rather generous in
his opinion.....though the projection is that we'll then only be 66% below
median.

Plus there can be lots of things to do in and around campus....and the scenery
is nice too. Plus there's over 100 different species of trees on campus. One
of these days, I should do the tree walk. Though my former $boss used to refer
to the students when its nice out as being a perk.....

My brother first met his wife when she was a freshman at a university he was
guest instructor for a semester at.

We once tried to get a new hire in at market, because they had once suggested
that once we did..the would work on bringing us all up to market. But, when it
came to salary negotiation...they said that's director pay and they couldn't do
that. They countered with 20k more than our manager, but it was turned down.
The person that had left position we were trying to refill, found out what had
been offered and said he'd come back for that.

For now I'm still here....but if I can stuff like what I have here, but with
more money (and perhaps less responsibility)....I'd probably jump ship....which
is basically what my now former $boss did. He gets to be just a sysadmin
again, which is all he ever wanted before he was pushed from team lead to
manager and then acting director....
