On the people side, I'll also recommend Michael Lopp's book Managing Humans (http://www.managinghumans.com/). It specifically deals with making the transition from, as he calls it "managing bits" to "managing humans." But my concern with these is that they may be more focused on technical practices than on people and IT's business role. While every organization structures itself a little differently, an IT Director is likely to spend more time dealing with the strategy and people issues than the technical practices, so I'm inclined to make these two a lower priority than the first two. (Unless the IT Director is also the sysadmin team, in which case read all four!)
