I do not believe making the mailing lists and IRC channels member only will server any purpose in reality, instead will only exclude members who may frequent them for another source of information. I personally, as a student and being based in the UK would not pay a yearly fee just for these, information can be found anywhere these days although the discussions are very useful and informative.
