You're not "going directly to the IP", you're going to "nsd.org",
which resolves to the IP address. The same way when you go to
"www.nsd.org", it resolves to the IP address.

In apache on the hosting company's side, they presumably have - for
your virtual-host, a "ServerName" declaration of "www.nsd.org". If you
can convince them to add a "ServerAlias" of "nsd.org", your problem
ends here.

If you cannot, no amount of proxying is going to help, because you're
going to continue to send a "Host: nsd.org" header, which their site
is not configured to understand and deal with.

You would want/need to set up another Apache or lighttpd somewhere to
listen for requests to "nsd.org" and 301 them to "www.nsd.org" so that
the hosting company's web server can deal with them. (You might want
to be more robust and redirect nsd.org/(.*) to www.nsd.org/$1 to catch
any URLs within the domain as well.
