Mark,
I take the term "System Administrator" as a broad statement that covers a
myriad of job functions. Now many people may not agree with my way of
thinking but I see the Profession of System Administration the same way I
see the Maintenance Mechanic in a Factory, Auto Mechanic in a Garage,
Electronics Tech in an Electronics Shop, Factory etc. It is someone who has
the skills to maintain a system (Telephone, DNS, Firewall, Database, Active
Directory Server etc, etc , etc,.) Sorry for the King and I reference. It
is a person who has the skills to troubleshoot an issue with the systems
(see previous list) without a script or instructions to follow. They are
people who can think on their feet and work outside of the boxed
description of their present position. Can they program? Yes but it is not
their niche. They are a logical group.

To paraphrase Jeff Foxworthy:

Do you maintain your Company's Oracle Server? Then you are a System
Administrator.
Do you manage the Telephone system for your Company? Then you are a System
Administrator.
Do you have a closet with bins of Cat5/6 Cables, Power Cords and vials of
small screws? Then you might be a hoarder but you also might be a System
Administrator.
Do you understand the statement "Out of Streams Space!" and know what to
do? Then you are a system administrator.

And it goes on. Just recently my job title was changed to "Data Specialist
and System Administrator" So I asked my new boss. Which system do I
administer? As the systems I currently managed were being legacyed . He
thought a bit and then said "Well the current system being retired and the
new ones coming in and any others that we bring in." So they added an S to
the title and it went to Data Specialist and Systems Administrator. But I
still think I am the man behind "That" door that seems to get things
working when everyone else can't.

So if you are that person. You ar a System Administrator.
