I like Matt's definition, though I might change 'computer infrastructure' to 'technology infrastructure'. Systems Administration to me encompasses everything from front-line help desk technicians (who are maintaining the end-user desktop and mobile systems) to SREs writing code to automate deployment and management of hundreds of thousands of systems. I don't care if you're dealing with end users, racks of hardware, global networks, or APIs... its all part of Systems Administration.
I'll also refer to a message I sent last summer describing many types of SAs and why they're all welcome in LOPSA. https://lists.lopsa.org/pipermail/discuss/2014-August/020041.html -David On Thu, Feb 26, 2015 at 9:56 AM, Matt Simmons <msimm...@lopsa.org> wrote: > In June of 2014, I wrote this: > > *System Administrators are the IT operations staff responsible for > designing, building, and maintaining an organization's computer > infrastructure* > > I think that still holds for the most part. > > I don't think of System Administration as a job - I think of it as a > responsibility.
