I asked my friend sjvn, who lives in Asheville, for recommendations:

I've heard good things about my local, Asheville, data center.

ERC is more about serious, Internet 2, bandwidth, but also offers some
colocation services in Asheville.

There, I do know the people and they Know their networking stuff and can
deliver 10Gbps in the area. Now, if only I could afford That level of
bandwidth.

The Uptime Institute makes the list of certified data centers public:

From that map you can see that Compass Data Centers has a certified Tier 3 DC in Raleigh-Durham.

Does anyone have any Tier 3 or better data centers for co-location

Not asking for research on my behalf but first hand accounts would be
    welcome!
