That Windows 8 upgrade only applies to machines bought AFTER ‘general
availability’, which I think was started maybe a month ago. Older computers are
out of luck.
It’s been hyped all over as “everyone can upgrade for cheap!” but when I read
on the site what the requirements are, it turns out people were confused by the
language.

Subject: Re: [SkullSpace-Discuss] Computer giveaway

I'd like to highlight the importance of providing legitimate licenses for
Windows XP if possible. Note, though, that OEM licenses can not be transferred.
However, if the whole system (along with an OEM license) can be provided, the
machine (with the OEM license) is transferable. OEM keys are simply locked to
the physical box that has the sticker of authenticity and activation code stuck
to it.

However, if you have any RETAIL licenses for windows XP that are now unused (or
windows 2000/ME/NT with Windows XP Upgrade licenses), they are still quite
valuable.

To hi-light this value, any computer licensed to run Windows XP, Vista, or 7,
is eligible to be upgraded to a Windows 8 license for $39.99 for residential
users (maximum 5 per household).

My apologies, that was probably my mistake during the very rapid clear out
that happened one day in the back workshop (old shelves) room.

What I meant was, there won't be any deliberate raiding.
