To all members,
After a few rounds on the discuss list I have put some thought into
different levels of membership that are modeled after other hackerspaces as
well as our own situation. All members of any level would have the same
application process that we currently use. *THIS ALSO APPLIES WHEN GOING UP
A LEVEL AS THE ACCESS RIGHTS CHANGE.*
3 Levels of membership
Casual rate member - $10/month ( Possibly a youth membership as well )
*Pros:*
- Access to the space while a full member is at the space, no FOB provided.
- Access to events free of charge, The main incentive to this level of
membership.
- Fancy photo ID card**
- Workshop access
*Cons:*
- No voting rights
- No access to Skullspace email address or server rack space / virtual
machine.
- No storage space for projects etc.
- Cannot run for or hold a director role.
- Cannot host events at the space.
Student Member - $20/month
*Pros:
*- 24/7 access to the space, Student hours are wonky sometimes.
- Access to events free of charge.
- Lockable storage for personal items.**
- Can host events in the classroom only
- Fancy photo ID card***
Cons:*
- No voting rights
- No access to Skullspace email address or server rack space / virtual
machine
- Cannot run for or hold a director role
- No workshop access *
*
Full membership - $40/month
*Pros:
*- 24/7 access to the space
- Access to events free of charge
- Voting rights
- Can run for and hold a director role
- Lockable storage for personal items***
*- Can host anything in any part of the space.*
*- Fancy photo ID card***
*- Workshop access *
Cons:*
- None! Well having to care about votes and reading the discuss list.
** To implement this tiered membership scheme there are a few things we
would need to change.
1) We would need to invest in some lockers or similar for people to put
laptops or expensive items in. This is more important with casual members
around.
2) Some form of laminated photo membership card so you can prove
yourselfand your membership level. I know its harsh
but better than than asking to see a FOB. This ID doesn't even need a real
name on it, they are simply to match a face to a membership level. In fact
lets put IRC names or similar on them!!
3) More events! More events are the incentive to get a casual membership!
4) This one is fun, A full members only dicuss list for voting issues. On
one hand letting everyone see the list gets a better conversation but it
could be tainted by options of those who cannot vote. We could simply send
any matters that need a vote to the regular list so they see what they are
missing. Also with 2 weeks to upgrade to a full member and 3 weeks notice
on a vote so the can get in on the vote in they want.
5) Membership levels can only be changed once every 3 months!! So casual to
full means you would need to wait 3 months before downgrading, the thought
is for seasonal members.
I know there are people very far on both sides of the fence on this one,
please think hard about what we need to do to keep SkullSpace strong going
in to the future. As always with discuss everything above is open to change
/ adjustment. This would bring us more in line with other spaces and get
more people in the door while helping us generate more needed income.
