And a good part of the cost of having people show up and dig for you is the efforts to co-ordinating those diggers -- not just the direct labour costs that goes to said diggers.

So, if you directly hire, manage and co-ordinate some manual labourers to do the digging (and/or do a good job of offering treats to friends), there could be some cost savings on the co-ordination side.

But remember, if there's an "employee-employer relationship", even for a day, then you could be liable for payroll remmitances to CRA and workers compensation.

This isn't simply a matter of what you and the people who do the work say to each other, but the actual nature of the relationship is very relevant

A middle of the road option between engaging a contractor to dig (who does all the labour co-ordinating) and directly hiring labourers is to deal with a temp agency that acts legally as the employer and takes care of the pay/remitt-admin side of things but also allows you to direct and manage the work itself.
