And a good part of the cost of having people show up and dig for you is
the efforts to co-ordinating those diggers -- not just the direct labour
costs that goes to said diggers.
So, if you directly hire, manage and co-ordinate some manual labourers
to do the digging (and/or do a good job of offering treats to friends),
there could be some cost savings on the co-ordination side.
But remember, if there's an "employee-employer relationship", even for a
day, then you could be liable for payroll remmitances to CRA and workers
compensation.
This isn't simply a matter of what you and the people who do the work
say to each other, but the actual nature of the relationship is very
relevant

A middle of the road option between engaging a contractor to dig (who
does all the labour co-ordinating) and directly hiring labourers is to
deal with a temp agency that acts legally as the employer and takes care
of the pay/remitt-admin side of things but also allows you to direct and
manage the work itself.
