I don't particularly like AD, but it works. It even works fairly well nowadays. Everything talks to it, everything integrates with it. Unless you have a specific reason to NOT deploy Active Directory, I would recommend you use that. The $64,000 question is what sort of client support do you need. If you only need MacOSX clients, you can use Apple's OpenDirectory product. It sucks randomly depending on the version of OS X Server you run it on. It also has backward- and forward-compatibility issues beyond belief. OTOH, it ships by default and it's native to the OS. If you only need UNIX clients (possibly including MacOSX now, not sure) you can run OpenLDAP or RedHat's IPA. I'm not aware of any other products that even attempt to match the scope of ActiveDirectory or eDirectory (which is what NDS is called nowadays, I think). Whoops, eDirectory is now NetIQ eDirectory, it's not even Novell any more. There are many solutions out there that do *part* of what AD/eD do, you'll need to be more specific. -Adam Thompson [email protected] (204) 291-7950 [1]Yes, it used to be "Engineer" until APEGM realized that was actually illegal unless I was also a P.Eng., which I'm not.
