Yes. What Jay said, 100%! Nothing I hate more than voicemail... Or having
our first contact for potential members be someone who has no connection to
them or who is not able to answer questions...

Mostly because it will likely end in painful frustration for queries
other than "Is anybody at the space right now?", and also because if
I'm giving someone a business card it's likely to facilitate follow-up
on something very specific. For example, if it's a media person, I'm
likely going to have them follow up to me directly so I can get them
in touch with the board (Or I might just shamelessly give them Ron or
Ian's number - sorry in advance guys!). It's true that the space
voicemail does go straight to [email protected], but I'd consider it
pretty rude if somebody gave me the phone number to a voice-mail
system.

Again, it's important to keep in mind the context in which business
cards are given out. Traditionally, a business card is only given out
after a personal connection is made - it's supposed to serve as a
physical representation of that contact (Japanese business culture
takes this to the extreme). I'm not going to give a voice-mail number
to a good contact.

Aside: As they represent personal contacts - business cards are also
supposed to survive for a long time - this is why I'm not a fan of
"free" business cards that fall apart easily. Leaflets and brochures
however, are expected to have the lifespan of however long it takes to
read them.

Your earlier comments seem to indicate that you view business cards as
a cheaper replacement for brochures. I'm afraid they don't replace
each other so much as compliment each other.

Ps. I understand that I'm pulling a total Patrick Bateman when it
comes to business cards, and I apologize to everyone who sees this as
an insane amount of bikeshedding over a piece of paper. I just really
happen to be fascinated by the design and thought that goes into
mundane things like this :)
