It's a limitation of the CPU used by Squeezebox.

But if you connect SB to a 'G' wireless access point via ethernet, then
you'll get full 'G' speed networking through your 'G' access point.

Subject: [slim] Using external accesspoint to get g format

I am using wireless version of squeezebox, I wonder if I connect
squeezebox with an accesspoint that support G would I be able to get the
full function of it? I remember seeing some where that I cannot simply
upgrade the PCMCIA card inside because of the limitation in buffer and
something else?
