They use a 2.5" HD to prevent noise (they say)
There were some guys who made a modification with 3.5" HD, but they needed
an external 12V power supply.
But you can also mount an external HD to the USB-Port and mount it, or use
NAS-Server.

Can you? The Hifidelio FAQ says

Can I connect any external hard disk to the Hifidelio?


Only Hermstedt's Hifidelio Hard Disk can be connected. This allows easy backup and restore of the contents of the Hifidelio.
