I use cdparanoia under Linux (use to use EAC in Windows) to rip and flac to encode. I don't use CDDB lookup, I tag the files manually because too often, I disagree with CDDB on how something should be tagged - but there are several rippers for Linux that use a cdparanoia backend, look up the CD in CDDB, and will encode to flac for you. Mandrake probably comes with one, if not more than one. Flac is imho the right way to go for lossless encoding. Just back it up!
