Another idea, if no-one has mentioned it yet, is to use'_ these_' (http://www.edirol.it/europe/details.asp?code=362&id=12&la=UK) monitor loudspeakers which have a digital in socket. Don't know what they sound like though, but it's an extra option to think about.
