I found this after looking at the CPAN module

Looks to me to be possible, but dependant on the network between slimserver and the squeezebox. Assuming they are on the same subnet, then player could simply send the appropriate frame to to a broadcast or unicast mac address. If there is a router (doing routing) in between then it will be harder and router specific (i.e. probably wont work)

In general if you need to manually enter the address of slimserver into the player then there is a router in the way and it won't work....
