WRT the small (8 band) display - it looks to me that the bass and treble
are the "right" way around (i.e. bass on the left) but that the first
band (deepest bass) is way over sensitive. I usually end up with
something like this:

Apologies for the poor ascii art but you get the idea. Vidur posted how
to adjust the sensitivity a while ago, I may try turning the first band
down.
