The changes that mp3gain makes to your mp3 file are not permanent. The changes are reversible if mp3gain has written tags to your files or you have noted the gain elsewhere. (I have written a script that writes the gain to a database as well as adding it to the id3v2 tag - I don't want mp3gain APE tags in my files.)
