The cost of the SB3 has dropped considerably. I can be had from Amazon for ~$230. If you really think you'll have no use for the receiver, you could always sell it on EBay. I would think you would be able to get at least $120 for it. The receiver by itself goes for $150.
On my hi-fi equipment (I would describe it as mid-grade) I don't notice any audible differences between the SB3 and the SBR. You might consider hanging onto the receiver for future use.
