I can say for the battery problem- put your controller back in the cradle nightly. That will solve your issue there.
Turn down your power settings- it will drain your battery faster, but will get rid of that annoying reconnection every time you use the controller. My controller picks up my network perfectly- same range as my laptop. Try changing the channel of your network.
