I voted for Obama, but not because he is black. There was no way I could vote for McCain given his chosen running mate (she seems nice enough, but she did not seem remotely qualified to be President). My ideals line up much closer with the Green party than they do with Republicans or Democrats, and normally they get my vote, but this year I didn't want to take the risk of McCain/Palin winning due to a split vote. So Obama got my vote. Of course, being in Texas, I could have voted Green without impacting the outcome.
But that said, I do think it's a great thing that this country has finally elected a non-white President. And I think it will also be a great thing if and when a woman is elected President. Not because a non-white or a woman is going to necessarily make a better President, but because I think it's a great statement that the country has made progress after a long, tumultuous, and all-too-frequently violent history of prejudice. It may be a vain hope, but I'd like to think that many of the racist folks out there will be forced to confront the fact that a black man is every bit as capable as a white man, and maybe it will help change their attitude.
