Ok - thanks.

Can't remember for definite, but I'm pretty sure that last time I tried
killing the process manually, this caused some upset.  Either the
service status still said "Started" or the service failed to restart
properly (and I ended up rebooting).

No, I don't think there is such an option.
You can file an enhancement request on bugs.slimdevices.com - it seems
reasonable 
(especially if one ever gets in the situation where a rescan takes all
day like some other posters!) 

What happens if you kill SlimServer manually without trying to stop the
service? Shouldn't Windows detect the service being down and
automatically restart it?
