I've been playing around with whether or not some of the more advanced 
cell-phones would fulfill this role.  Obviously it would only work on 
headphones (unless you used some active extension speakers), but it is 
definitely starting to look like everything that might be required is already 
there (mp3 players, browsers, connectivity - inluding 802.11b on the larger 
nokias).  Would effectively give you a small walkman with direct access to 
your music collection.  Might be interesting to see what would happen if you 
tried a cut-down skin of softsqueeze on a java-enabled phone as well...
