The brightness button is required for firmware updates but you can now set the SB3 to auto-update, at least in recent firmwares. Which you have to load with the brightness button first, so kind of a chicken-and-egg thing - but if you have a fairly recent firmware you can just set it by pressing and holding left and going through setup.
