I know... I was scared of them at first too. But now that I understand them it makes life much easier, especially in Squeezebox land. They are nothing that you have to create--they already exist on your system... you just have to find out what the UNC path is for your music folder.
In Vista, if you type "Network" in the address bar of Windows Explorer, you should see all you networked computers, then you can drill down to the folder level and it should show you the UNC path when you click in the address bar.
